This course provides a comprehensive introduction to chromatography with a focus on liquid chromatography techniques used in research and industry. Participants will learn the fundamentals of planar chromatography, including thin layer chromatography (TLC) as one of its key techniques, as well as column chromatography. The course also covers the principles of HPLC and chromatographic isolation, along with essential concepts in method development for both analysis and compound purification. Participants will further explore key parameters involved in method validation for liquid chromatography. Multiple hands-on sessions will guide participants step-by-step through real workflows and instrument operation (recycling HPLC, analytical HPLC, medium-pressure LC and preparative LC), ensuring practical competence in setup, troubleshooting and data interpretation.
This workshop provides a comprehensive introduction to mass spectrometry, beginning with the evolution of MS instrumentation from electron impact systems to advanced Orbitrap technology, with emphasis on ionization, analysis and detection principles. Participants will learn how to interpret mass spectra, recognize key fragmentation patterns and understand common rearrangement processes essential for structural elucidation. The workshop places strong emphasis on practical skills, with hands-on sessions where participants use their own laptops to process MS data with MZMine, calculate bioactivity scores, identify compounds using SIRIUS, and build and interpret molecular networks using GNPS and Cytoscape. Through guided exercises, participants will gain confidence in applying MS tools for natural product research and analysis.
